Skip hire in Cannock
Cannock is a town in Staffordshire, sitting around 12 miles north of Birmingham on the edge of Cannock Chase, with a population of around 30,000. It appears in the Domesday Book as Chenet and was for centuries a small settlement within the royal forest of Cannock, a hunting ground held by the Crown and later the Bishops of Lichfield. The town received a market charter in 1259, and the market still trades in the centre several days a week.
Coal transformed Cannock in the nineteenth century. The Cannock Chase coalfield was worked intensively from the 1850s, and pits at Hednesford, Chasetown, Littleworth and elsewhere drew thousands of miners to the area, turning a small market town into an industrial district. Chasewater, a large reservoir originally built to feed the canals serving the collieries, is now a country park. The last deep mine in the coalfield closed in 1993, and the Museum of Cannock Chase at Hednesford records the industry.
Cannock Chase itself is the town's defining landscape — around 26 square miles of heathland, forest and former hunting ground designated a National Landscape, the smallest such area in mainland Britain and one of the most important lowland heaths in the country. It holds a substantial fallow deer population, extensive mountain biking trails at Follow the Dog and Monkey Trail, and the German Military Cemetery containing nearly 5,000 German and Austrian war dead brought together from across Britain. The Chase was a vast military training camp in the First World War, with two hutted camps housing tens of thousands of troops.
Cannock sits at junction 11 and 12 of the M6 with the M6 Toll passing to the south, and Cannock station is on the Chase Line, electrified in 2018, with services to Birmingham in around 40 minutes and north to Rugeley. The A5 and A34 also serve the town. Neighbouring communities include Hednesford, Rugeley, Norton Canes, Heath Hayes, Great Wyrley, Cheslyn Hay and Penkridge.
Housing in Cannock is dominated by twentieth-century growth, with Victorian terraces built for the colliery workforce in the older parts of town and the surrounding pit villages, extensive interwar and post-war council estates, and substantial private development from the 1970s onwards on the edges. Property is affordable relative to Birmingham and Lichfield, and the town's motorway position and improved rail links have made it an increasingly popular commuter base, with continued housebuilding on former colliery and industrial land around the town.
