What changes the price?

Your quote reflects a few things beyond the skip itself. Here’s what moves the number — and where you can save.

• Size & weight — skips have a weight limit as well as a volume limit, and heavy waste (soil, rubble, concrete) hits it first, so a smaller skip is often right for heavy loads. Our skip size guide and job-by-job guide help you choose.
• Where you are — prices reflect local transfer-station gate fees, the distance from a depot and demand. London and the South East typically run higher than the North, Midlands and Wales, which is why the “from” figure is your best-served-area price.
• What you’re throwing away — every tonne sent to landfill carries landfill tax: from April 2026 that’s £130.75 a tonne for general waste and £8.65 a tonne for clean inert waste like soil and rubble (the inert rate more than doubled this year). Keep rubble clean and separated and it qualifies for the lower rate — mix in general waste and the whole load is charged at the higher one.
• Whether you need a permit — none on your own driveway; on a public road the council charges a permit fee (roughly £15–£165 depending on the authority, higher in some city centres). We apply for it and include it in your quote — see do I need a skip permit?
• Restricted items — a few things can’t go in a general skip and are charged separately or need their own disposal: mattresses, upholstered furniture (sofas and chairs are now handled separately as they contain persistent organic pollutants), fridges, tyres and plasterboard. • Hire period — standard hire is up to 7–14 days; longer, or exchanged skips on ongoing sites, are quoted to suit.
