Skip hire in Rugeley
Rugeley is a town in Staffordshire, sitting on the River Trent at the northern edge of Cannock Chase around nine miles south-east of Stafford, with a population of around 24,000. It appears in the Domesday Book as Rugelie and grew as a market town, receiving its charter in 1259, with tanning, glassmaking and later coal shaping its industrial history.
The town became notorious in 1856 through William Palmer, the Rugeley Poisoner — a local doctor and compulsive gambler convicted of poisoning a friend with strychnine and suspected of many more deaths, including his wife, brother and several of his own children. The case gripped Victorian Britain, and Palmer's trial was moved to the Old Bailey by a special Act of Parliament because a fair hearing in Staffordshire was thought impossible. Charles Dickens called him the greatest villain that ever stood in the Old Bailey. Local legend holds that the town petitioned the Prime Minister to change its name, and was told it could take his — Palmerston.
Coal dominated the twentieth century. Lea Hall Colliery, sunk in the 1950s, was one of the most modern pits in the country and fed the adjacent Rugeley power stations directly by conveyor. Rugeley A and B power stations were landmarks for decades, their cooling towers visible across the Trent valley, until the last closed in 2016 and the towers were demolished in 2021. The site is now being redeveloped for housing and employment.
Cannock Chase rises immediately south of the town — around 26 square miles of heathland, forest and former hunting ground designated a National Landscape, with a large fallow deer population, mountain biking trails and the German Military Cemetery. Blithfield Reservoir and the Trent and Mersey Canal are close by, and Shugborough Hall, the Anson family seat with its remarkable collection of eighteenth-century monuments, stands a few miles west.
Rugeley sits on the A51 and A460 with the M6 Toll close by, and Rugeley Town and Rugeley Trent Valley stations give services to Birmingham on the electrified Chase Line and to Stafford and the West Coast Main Line.
Housing ranges from Georgian and earlier property around the Market Place and Brook Square to Victorian terraces, extensive post-war estates built for the colliery and power station workforce at Pear Tree and Etchinghill, and substantial modern development on former industrial land, with property among the more affordable in Staffordshire.
