Wincanton is a small market town in south Somerset, sitting on the edge of the Blackmore Vale around 25 miles south of Bath, with a population of around 6,000. It has been a settlement since Saxon times and grew as a coaching town on the old London to Exeter road, when the volume of traffic through the town supported a string of inns along the High Street. Much of the town centre was rebuilt in the eighteenth century following fires, giving Wincanton an unusually consistent Georgian character for a town of its size, with handsome stone frontages along the main streets.

The town's best-known feature is Wincanton Racecourse, a National Hunt course on the northern edge of town that has been racing since 1867 and holds fixtures through the winter season. St Peter and St Paul's Church sits at the top of the High Street, and the town has a small museum recording its coaching and market history. Wincanton has an unusual claim to fame as the first town outside the fictional Discworld to be twinned with Ankh-Morpork, a link established with the author Terry Pratchett, and a small development in the town has streets named after locations from the books.

Wincanton sits directly on the A303, the main route between London and the south-west, which has made it a significant stopping point for traffic heading to Devon and Cornwall, with the A371 running north towards Castle Cary and Shepton Mallet. The town has no station, but Templecombe and Castle Cary are both a short drive, the latter offering fast services to London Paddington. Surrounding villages include Bruton, Castle Cary, Templecombe, Milborne Port, Charlton Musgrove and Bayford, with Yeovil, Frome and Sherborne all within easy reach.

Housing in Wincanton ranges from Georgian stone townhouses along the High Street and Market Place — much of the centre within a conservation area and heavily listed — to Victorian terraces, interwar and post-war housing, and substantial modern estates built on the town's edges as it has expanded over recent decades. The surrounding countryside is dotted with stone farmhouses, cottages and converted agricultural buildings, and the area's appeal to buyers moving out from Bath, Bristol and London supports a steady flow of high-value renovation, barn conversion and extension work.
