Southend-on-Sea is a coastal city in Essex, sitting on the north bank of the Thames Estuary around 40 miles east of London, with a population of around 180,000 — the largest settlement in Essex. It grew from the "south end" of the ancient parish of Prittlewell into a Georgian bathing resort, and then exploded in the Victorian era when the railway brought Londoners down the estuary in vast numbers. For over a century Southend was the archetypal East End seaside destination, and it was granted city status in 2022 in memory of Sir David Amess, the local MP murdered in 2021, who had campaigned for it for decades.

Southend Pier is the town's defining landmark and, at 1.34 miles, the longest pleasure pier in the world, with its own railway running the length of it out into the estuary. Adventure Island sits at the shore end, and the seafront runs east through Southchurch to Thorpe Bay and west to the old fishing village of Leigh-on-Sea, where cockle sheds still operate on the Old Leigh waterfront. Other landmarks include the Cliffs Pavilion, the Kursaal — one of the world's first purpose-built amusement parks, opened in 1901 — the Priory Park remains of Prittlewell Priory, and the clifftop gardens overlooking the estuary.

Southend is well connected, with two lines to London: Southend Central and Westcliff run to Fenchurch Street in under an hour, while Southend Victoria and Prittlewell serve Liverpool Street. London Southend Airport sits north of the town, and the A127 and A13 give road links towards the M25. The city takes in Westcliff-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea, Thorpe Bay, Shoeburyness, Prittlewell, Eastwood and Southchurch, each with a distinct character — Leigh in particular has become one of the most sought-after addresses on the Essex coast.

Housing across Southend is dominated by Victorian and Edwardian property built during the resort boom, including large seafront villas and boarding houses in Westcliff and Southchurch — a great many since converted into flats, HMOs and bedsits — alongside interwar semis in Thorpe Bay, Eastwood and Leigh, and post-war estates at Shoeburyness and Prittlewell. The town has one of the highest rates of flat conversion in the east of England, and the influx of London buyers over the past decade has driven a sustained wave of refurbishment, loft conversion and extension work across Leigh, Westcliff and Thorpe Bay.
