Skip hire in Redditch
Redditch is a town in Worcestershire, sitting around 15 miles south of Birmingham, with a population of around 85,000. It grew from a small settlement beside a red ditch — possibly a reference to the local red clay soil — into the world centre of one of the most specialised industries imaginable: needle making. By the nineteenth century Redditch and the surrounding villages produced around ninety per cent of the world's sewing needles, along with fish hooks, fishing tackle and springs.
The industry was extraordinarily concentrated. Forge Mill Needle Museum, housed in a working water-powered scouring mill on the edge of town, is the only needle museum in the world and preserves the machinery and the trade's history — including the brutal conditions of needle pointing, where dry grinding filled the air with metal and stone dust and killed workers in their thirties. The mill sits beside the ruins of Bordesley Abbey, a Cistercian house founded in 1138.
From needles the town moved into fishing tackle, springs and motorcycles. The Royal Enfield works at Redditch built motorcycles from 1901 until 1967, and the company's slogan, "made like a gun", reflected its origins supplying parts to the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. Royal Enfield motorcycles are still made under the name in India, making it the oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production in the world.
Redditch was designated a new town in 1964 to take Birmingham overspill, and its population roughly trebled. The plan laid out a series of self-contained residential districts connected by a distinctive network of segregated cycleways and a dedicated busway, with a new town centre and the Kingfisher Shopping Centre. Arrow Valley Country Park, a 900-acre green corridor with a large lake, runs through the middle of the town as part of that design.
Redditch sits on the A441 and A448 with the M42 at junction 2 close by, and Redditch station is the southern terminus of the Cross-City Line, giving services to Birmingham in around 40 minutes. Neighbouring communities include Bromsgrove, Alvechurch, Studley, Astwood Bank and Alcester.
Housing is dominated by the new town programme, with extensive 1960s to 1980s estates across Church Hill, Matchborough, Winyates, Woodrow and Lodge Park, alongside older property around the Church Green and Alcester Street, and modern development on the edges, with much of the original stock now reaching the point of significant refurbishment.
