Pontypridd is a town in Rhondda Cynon Taf, sitting at the confluence of the Rivers Taff and Rhondda around 12 miles north of Cardiff, with a population of around 30,000. Its position at the mouth of the Rhondda valleys made it the natural gateway to the South Wales coalfield, and the town grew rapidly through the nineteenth century as coal from the Rhondda passed through on its way to the docks at Cardiff and Barry. At its peak Pontypridd railway station had the longest platform in the world, handling the enormous volume of miners and coal traffic moving through the valleys.

The town takes its name from the Old Bridge, William Edwards' single-span stone arch of 1756 — at the time the longest single-span bridge in Britain and still standing beside its Victorian replacement. Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, laid out in 1923, contains the National Lido of Wales, a restored 1927 art deco open-air pool, and a memorial to Evan and James James, the father and son from Pontypridd who wrote "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau", the Welsh national anthem, in 1856. The town also has strong sporting and musical traditions, and Tom Jones was born in nearby Treforest.

Pontypridd is well connected, with Pontypridd station a major junction on the Valley Lines offering frequent services to Cardiff in around half an hour and up the Rhondda, Merthyr and Aberdare branches. The A470 dual carriageway runs alongside the town, linking Cardiff to Merthyr Tydfil and the Brecon Beacons. The University of South Wales has its main campus at Treforest just south of the town, giving Pontypridd a substantial student population. Surrounding communities include Treforest, Cilfynydd, Graig, Hawthorn, Rhydyfelin, Church Village and the Rhondda valleys beyond.

Housing across Pontypridd is dominated by the terraced housing of the coalfield, built in long rows following the contours of the steep valley sides in Graig, Trallwn, Cilfynydd and Treforest, alongside larger Victorian villas on the better sites, interwar housing and post-war estates on the higher ground. Property is among the most affordable in Wales, which supports a very active buy-to-let and renovation market, and the student population sustains a significant HMO sector around Treforest. The older stone and brick terraces generate a constant flow of re-roofs, rewires, damp works and full internal refurbishments.
