Loughborough is a market town in Leicestershire, sitting on the River Soar around 11 miles north of Leicester, with a population of around 60,000 — the largest town in the county. It has held a market charter since 1221 and grew through hosiery, engineering and bellfounding. John Taylor & Co, established in the town in 1839, is the largest bell foundry in the world and cast Great Paul for St Paul's Cathedral, still the heaviest bell ever cast in Britain. Loughborough was also home to Herbert Morris cranes and the Brush Works, which has built locomotives and electrical equipment in the town since the nineteenth century.

The town's best-known landmark is the Carillon War Memorial in Queen's Park, a 151-foot tower housing 47 bells — the first grand carillon built in Britain — erected to commemorate the town's dead of the First World War. The Taylor's Bell Foundry Museum records the town's bellfounding history, and the Great Central Railway, Britain's only double-track heritage main line, runs steam services from Loughborough Central south towards Leicester. The market still trades in the town centre three days a week, and the Charnwood Museum sits in the Queen's Park.

Loughborough is well connected, with Loughborough station on the Midland Main Line offering trains to London St Pancras in around 80 minutes and services to Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, and the M1 running immediately west with junction 23 serving the town. East Midlands Airport is a short drive away. Loughborough University, consistently ranked among the best in the country and internationally renowned for sport, sits on a large campus west of the centre and gives the town a very substantial student population. The surrounding area includes Shepshed, Quorn, Barrow upon Soar, Sileby, Hathern and the Charnwood Forest.

Housing in Loughborough ranges from Victorian terraces in the Storer and Ashby Road areas and around the town centre to Edwardian and interwar semis in Forest Road and Shelthorpe, post-war estates at Thorpe Acre and Warwick Way, and modern development at Grange Park and on the town's northern edge. The student population supports one of the highest concentrations of HMOs in the East Midlands, particularly in the streets between the town centre and the campus, which are refurbished constantly between tenancies — and the town continues to expand with new housing to the west and south.
