Lincoln is a cathedral city in Lincolnshire, sitting on a limestone ridge above the River Witham, with a population of around 105,000. It was founded as the Roman colonia of Lindum, one of only four in Britain, and its Roman fabric is unusually visible — Newport Arch, at the top of Bailgate, is the only Roman archway in Britain still used by traffic, and substantial stretches of the Roman wall and the extraordinary Fosse Dyke, a canal cut around AD 120 and still navigable, survive.
Lincoln Cathedral is the city's overwhelming presence. Begun in 1072 and rebuilt after an earthquake in 1185, it was for over two centuries — from 1311 until its central spire collapsed in 1548 — the tallest building in the world, exceeding the Great Pyramid. Ruskin called it out and out the most precious piece of architecture in the British Isles. Its west front, the Angel Choir and the Lincoln Imp, a small carved figure that has become the city's emblem, draw visitors from around the world.
Lincoln Castle, built by William the Conqueror in 1068, stands opposite across Castle Hill and holds one of only four surviving original copies of Magna Carta from 1215, displayed alongside the Charter of the Forest — the only place where both documents are held together. The castle's Victorian prison contains a unique separate-system chapel, where prisoners sat in individual coffin-like stalls able to see only the preacher.
Steep Hill, running from the lower city up to the cathedral quarter, is regularly voted one of the finest streets in Britain and is genuinely steep — a handrail runs its length. The Jew's House and Jew's Court on the hill are among the oldest surviving domestic buildings in England, dating from around 1150 and testament to Lincoln's significant medieval Jewish community. The city's industrial era brought Ruston's and Clayton & Shuttleworth, and the world's first tanks were designed and built in Lincoln in 1915.
Lincoln sits on the A46 and A15, with Lincoln station giving services to Nottingham, Sheffield, Leeds and London King's Cross. The University of Lincoln, established on the Brayford Pool in 1996, transformed the lower city. Housing ranges from medieval and Georgian property uphill around the Bail and Minster Yard to Victorian terraces in the West End and Sincil Bank, interwar and post-war estates at Ermine and Birchwood, and substantial modern development around the Brayford waterfront and the city's edges.
