Hamilton is a town in South Lanarkshire, sitting on the River Clyde around 12 miles south-east of Glasgow, with a population of around 55,000. It is the administrative centre of South Lanarkshire and one of the principal towns of the Clyde Valley. Hamilton takes its name from the Hamilton family, Dukes of Hamilton, who held enormous influence in Scotland for centuries and built Hamilton Palace here — once one of the grandest houses in Britain, demolished in the 1920s after mining subsidence undermined its foundations. The town grew substantially through coal mining and weaving in the nineteenth century.

The most striking survivor of the Hamilton estate is the Hamilton Mausoleum, a vast domed neoclassical tomb built for the 10th Duke, said to have the longest echo of any building in the world at around 15 seconds. Chatelherault Country Park, just south of the town, preserves William Adam's ornate hunting lodge of 1732 and 500 acres of the former estate grounds. Other landmarks include the Low Parks Museum, the Cameronians regimental museum and Hamilton Park Racecourse. Strathclyde Country Park, with its large loch used for international rowing and watersports, lies on the town's northern edge.

Hamilton is very well connected, with Hamilton Central and Hamilton West stations offering frequent services to Glasgow Central in around half an hour, and the M74 running along the eastern side of the town linking north to Glasgow and south towards Carlisle. The M8 and East Kilbride are both within easy reach. The town's neighbourhoods include Burnbank, Blantyre, Bothwell, Uddingston, Ferniegair, Eddlewood, Whitehill, Hillhouse and Earnock, with Motherwell and Wishaw immediately to the east.

Housing in Hamilton is varied, with Victorian sandstone tenements and terraces in Burnbank and around the town centre, substantial villas in Bothwell and along the Clyde Valley — among the most desirable addresses in Lanarkshire — interwar housing in Earnock and Hillhouse, extensive post-war estates at Whitehill, Fairhill and Eddlewood, and modern development on the town's edges. Property spans a wide range of values, supporting both an active buy-to-let and renovation market and a steady flow of higher-value extensions and refurbishments in the more affluent areas.
