Bedlington is a town in Northumberland, sitting above the River Blyth around 12 miles north of Newcastle, with a population of around 18,000. It is an old settlement with a recorded history going back to the tenth century, when it was granted to the Bishops of Durham — the town and its surrounding parishes formed an enclave known as Bedlingtonshire, administratively part of County Durham rather than Northumberland until 1844. The long main street, with its wide market place and the parish church of St Cuthbert, still reflects that older market town character.
Bedlington's industrial fame came from iron. The Bedlington Ironworks, established in 1736 and later run by Michael Longridge, became one of the most important in the country. It was here that Michael Longridge and John Birkinshaw patented the wrought-iron rail in 1820 — the innovation that made long-distance railways practical — and the works built locomotives, including engines for the Stockton and Darlington Railway. George Stephenson was a regular visitor, and rails from Bedlington were exported around the world. Coal mining followed and dominated the surrounding area into the twentieth century.
The town lends its name to the Bedlington Terrier, a distinctive lamb-like dog bred here in the early nineteenth century by miners and quarrymen for ratting and poaching. The breed was first recorded in the town in 1825 and remains closely associated with it. Bedlington also holds an annual Miners' Picnic, one of the surviving traditions of the Northumberland coalfield, and Humford Woods and the Blyth riverside provide the town's main green space alongside the Attlee Park and Gallagher Park.
Bedlington sits on the A1068 and A192 with the A1 a short distance west, giving links to Newcastle in around half an hour. The reopened Northumberland Line runs nearby with stations at Bedlington and Ashington restoring passenger services to Newcastle after nearly sixty years. Neighbouring communities include Bedlington Station, Choppington, Guide Post, Stakeford, Cambois, Ashington, Blyth and Morpeth.
Housing in Bedlington ranges from older stone property along the Front Street and around the market place to colliery terraces at Bedlington Station and Netherton, interwar and post-war council-built estates, and modern private development on the edges of the town. Property is affordable by national standards, and the town has drawn steady interest from Newcastle commuters. Regeneration of the town centre has been a long-running local issue, with schemes to redevelop the former Tesco site and improve the Front Street shaping much of the recent debate.
