Wait-and-load is a skip service where the lorry delivers the skip, waits while you load it, then takes it away in the same visit — so the skip never stays on the road. Because it isn’t left in place, you don’t need a council permit, which makes it ideal for city-centre sites, red routes and places with nowhere to put a skip.
How does wait-and-load work?
- The lorry arrives with an empty skip and lowers it (or waits alongside).
- You load your waste straight in, usually within an agreed time window.
- The skip is lifted and taken away there and then — nothing is left behind.
Because the skip is only present while being loaded, there’s no permit application, no parking-bay suspension and no skip sitting on the street overnight.
When is wait-and-load the right choice?
| Situation | Why wait-and-load helps |
|---|---|
| No off-road space | No driveway or yard to place a skip — and no permit delay. |
| City centres & red routes | Where a standing skip isn’t allowed or a permit is costly and slow. |
| Quick, contained jobs | Shop fit-outs, office strip-outs and clearances that can be loaded in one go. |
| Sensitive locations | Where you’d rather not leave a skip unattended. |
Things to plan for
You’ll want your waste ready to load so the lorry isn’t waiting longer than booked. It suits jobs you can load in one session rather than filling gradually over days — for those, a standard skip or a scheduled collection is better. If your skip can go on a public road and you’d rather fill it over time, we simply arrange the permit for you instead.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for wait-and-load?
No. Because the skip is loaded and removed in the same visit and never left on the road, no council permit is required.
How long does the lorry wait?
There’s an agreed loading window — enough to load a prepared job. Have your waste ready so the collection stays within the booked time.
Is wait-and-load more expensive than a normal skip?
It can cost more per visit because the lorry and driver stay on site, but it saves the permit fee and suits jobs where a standing skip isn’t possible. For the right job it’s often the cheaper overall option.
Can I use wait-and-load for a big clear-out?
Yes, as long as it can be loaded in one session. For waste generated gradually over several days, a standard skip or scheduled collection is usually better.
