Wakefield is a city in West Yorkshire, sitting on the River Calder around nine miles south of Leeds, with a population of around 110,000 and a district of some 350,000. It grew as a market town and an important centre of the wool and cloth trade in the medieval period, and it was for centuries the administrative capital of the West Riding of Yorkshire, a role it still reflects today as the seat of West Yorkshire's county-level institutions.
Wakefield's history is marked by the Battle of Wakefield in December 1460, one of the key engagements of the Wars of the Roses, fought near Sandal Castle on the city's southern edge. Richard, Duke of York, was killed there, and the battle is traditionally linked to the mnemonic "Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain" used to remember the colours of the rainbow. The ruins of Sandal Castle survive on their mound above the Calder. The Chantry Chapel on Wakefield Bridge, built in the 1340s, is the finest of only four surviving medieval bridge chapels in England.
The city's cathedral, All Saints, has the tallest spire in Yorkshire at 247 feet, and Wakefield became a city in 1888 when the diocese was created. Wakefield has a notable place in drama: the Wakefield Mystery Plays, a cycle of medieval religious dramas, are among the most important surviving examples of early English theatre, and the anonymous author known as the Wakefield Master is regarded as one of the finest dramatists of the medieval period.
Wakefield's greatest modern cultural asset is The Hepworth Wakefield, opened in 2011 on the Calder waterfront in a striking building by David Chipperfield. It celebrates Barbara Hepworth, the sculptor, who was born in Wakefield in 1903, and it has become one of the most significant art galleries outside London. The Yorkshire Sculpture Park at West Bretton, within the district, is an internationally acclaimed open-air gallery set in 500 acres of parkland, with works by Henry Moore, who was born in nearby Castleford.
The city's industrial history includes textiles, coal and engineering, and the National Coal Mining Museum for England is based at Caphouse Colliery nearby. Wakefield sits close to the M1 and M62, with Wakefield Westgate and Kirkgate stations giving services to London King's Cross in under two hours and to Leeds in fifteen minutes. Housing ranges from Georgian property around St John's Square — among the finest Georgian quarters in the north — to Victorian terraces, extensive post-war estates, and modern development on former colliery land.
