Uckfield is a market town in East Sussex, sitting on the River Uck at the southern edge of the Ashdown Forest around 15 miles north-east of Brighton, with a population of around 15,000. It grew as a coaching and market town on the road between London and Lewes, with a market charter granted in the thirteenth century, and its High Street still climbs the hill in the way that the old coaching route dictated. Uckfield is best known nationally, however, as the place from which Lord Lucan disappeared in 1974, after his abandoned car was found at Newhaven following a visit to friends in the town.

Uckfield sits on the A22, giving links north towards East Grinstead and the M25 and south to Eastbourne, with the A26 running to Lewes and Tunbridge Wells. Uckfield station is the terminus of the Oxted line, with services to London Bridge in around an hour and a quarter — the line once continued south to Lewes, and the campaign to reinstate that link has run for decades. The Ashdown Forest, the largest free public access space in the south-east and the setting for the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, lies immediately north. Surrounding villages include Framfield, Buxted, Maresfield, Isfield, Little Horsted and Halland, with Lewes, Crowborough and Heathfield nearby.

Housing in Uckfield ranges from Georgian and Victorian property along the High Street and Church Street to Victorian and Edwardian villas around the older centre, interwar and post-war housing, and substantial modern estates at Manor Park, Ridgewood and Hempstead Fields built as the town expanded through the later twentieth century. The surrounding countryside has a large stock of period cottages, farmhouses and oast houses, many converted, and the area's proximity to both London and the coast keeps demand for extensions, loft conversions and full refurbishments consistently high.
