Oswestry is a market town in north Shropshire, sitting close to the Welsh border around 17 miles north-west of Shrewsbury, with a population of around 17,000. Its position on the border has shaped its whole history — the town changed hands repeatedly between England and Wales, and Welsh was widely spoken here well into the twentieth century. The name comes from "Oswald's Tree", after King Oswald of Northumbria, killed nearby at the Battle of Maserfield in 642. Just outside the town stands Old Oswestry, one of the finest and best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in Britain, with its dramatic multiple ramparts still clearly visible.

The town centre retains a strong market character, with a charter dating back to 1190 and street markets still trading twice a week alongside the indoor Powis Hall Market. Landmarks include St Oswald's Church, the Grade II* listed Guildhall, and the timber-framed Llwyd Mansion of 1604 at the top of Cross Street. Oswestry was a significant railway town as the headquarters of the Cambrian Railways, and the Cambrian Heritage Railways preserve that history at the old station. The poet Wilfred Owen was born just outside the town at Plas Wilmot in 1893.

Oswestry sits just off the A5, giving good road links south to Shrewsbury and the M54 and north to Wrexham and Chester, though the town has had no passenger rail service since 1966 — Gobowen, two miles north, is the nearest station on the Shrewsbury to Chester line. The Montgomery Canal and Offa's Dyke Path both pass close by, and the Shropshire Hills and Berwyn Mountains are within easy reach. Surrounding villages include Gobowen, Whittington, Morda, Trefonen, Weston Rhyn and St Martins, with Ellesmere, Chirk and Llanymynech nearby.

Housing in Oswestry ranges from Georgian and Victorian townhouses and terraces around the town centre — much of it within a conservation area — to Victorian villas along Willow Street and Church Street, interwar and post-war housing across Morda and Middleton Road, and modern estates on the eastern and southern edges. The surrounding countryside has a substantial stock of stone and brick farmhouses, cottages and converted agricultural buildings, and the wider area supports a steady market in barn conversions, holiday lets and rural renovation alongside the town's own refurbishment work.
