Lancaster is a city in Lancashire, sitting on the River Lune a few miles inland from Morecambe Bay, with a population of around 52,000. It has been a settlement since Roman times — the name derives from the Roman fort on the hill above the river — and gave its name to the House of Lancaster and the Duchy of Lancaster, which the reigning monarch still holds as Duke of Lancaster. The city grew wealthy in the eighteenth century as a port, at one point the fourth largest slave-trading port in Britain, a history the city has increasingly acknowledged, and the Georgian merchant houses and the Custom House on St George's Quay date from that era.

Lancaster Castle dominates the skyline, a Norman fortification that served as a working prison until 2011 and as the courtroom where the Pendle witches were tried in 1612. Beside it stands the Priory Church of St Mary, and above the city the Ashton Memorial — a vast Edwardian folly built by the linoleum magnate Lord Ashton — rises out of Williamson Park with views across the bay to the Lake District. Other landmarks include the Judges' Lodgings, the Lancaster Canal running through the city, and the Maritime Museum on the quay. Lancaster University, on a campus south of the city, and the University of Cumbria give the city a substantial student population.

Lancaster is well connected, with Lancaster station on the West Coast Main Line offering trains to London Euston in around two and a half hours and fast services to Manchester, Preston, Carlisle and Glasgow. The M6 runs immediately east of the city with junctions 33 and 34 serving it, and the Lake District, Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales are all within easy reach. Morecambe and Heysham sit on the coast a few miles west. The city's neighbourhoods include Bowerham, Scotforth, Freehold, Moorlands, Skerton, Halton and Bolton-le-Sands, with Carnforth and Galgate nearby.

Housing in Lancaster ranges from Georgian townhouses in the historic core and around Castle Hill to extensive Victorian terraces in Freehold, Bowerham and Skerton built for the mill and linoleum workforce, alongside interwar semis in Scotforth, post-war estates at Ridge and Ryelands, and modern development on the southern and eastern edges. Much of the centre lies within conservation areas with a high concentration of listed buildings, so period work is carefully controlled. The student population supports a significant HMO market around Bowerham, Freehold and the streets near the universities, refurbished regularly between tenancies.
