Keighley is a town in West Yorkshire, sitting where the Worth valley meets the Aire around ten miles north-west of Bradford, with a population of around 55,000. It appears in the Domesday Book as Chichelai and grew as a market town, receiving its charter in 1305, before the Industrial Revolution transformed it into a major centre of worsted spinning and textile machinery manufacture. The fast-flowing becks running off the Pennines provided the power, and Keighley's mills and engineering works made it one of the most industrialised towns in the Aire valley.
Keighley's engineering reputation was considerable. Prince-Smith and Son and other firms made textile machinery exported worldwide, and the town produced washing machines, cranes and machine tools. That industrial base drew substantial migration, and Keighley has a large and long-established Pakistani community, particularly from Mirpur, who came for mill work from the 1950s.
The town's greatest cultural asset lies just up the Worth valley at Haworth, where the Brontë sisters lived at the parsonage and wrote Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Keighley was the family's nearest town and the railhead for visitors, and the Brontë Parsonage Museum draws visitors from around the world. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, a preserved branch line running five miles from Keighley through Haworth to Oxenhope, is one of the most celebrated heritage railways in Britain and was the setting for the 1970 film of The Railway Children.
Cliffe Castle, a Victorian mill owner's mansion set in landscaped grounds, is now the town's museum, and East Riddlesden Hall, a seventeenth-century merchant's house in the care of the National Trust, stands on the edge of town. The Pennine moors above Haworth — Top Withens, the ruined farmhouse often identified with Wuthering Heights, and Ponden Kirk — are among the most visited literary landscapes in England.
Keighley sits on the A629 and A650, with Keighley station giving services to Leeds, Bradford and Skipton on the Airedale Line. Housing is dominated by stone terraces built for the mill workforce across the town, alongside substantial mill owners' villas at Utley and Oakworth, interwar semis, post-war estates at Braithwaite and Guardhouse, and modern development on the edges. Property is among the more affordable in West Yorkshire, and the ageing stone stock supports a steady renovation market.
