Skip hire in Elgin
Elgin is a town in Moray, sitting on the River Lossie around five miles inland from the Moray Firth, with a population of around 25,000. It is the administrative and commercial centre of Moray and one of the oldest royal burghs in Scotland, granted its charter by King David I around 1136. The town grew up on the route between Inverness and Aberdeen, with a castle on Lady Hill above the town and a long history as a market centre for the fertile farmland of the Laich of Moray.
Elgin Cathedral is the town's great monument. Founded in 1224 and known as the Lantern of the North, it was among the most beautiful Gothic buildings in Scotland — and its ruin is the result of one of the more notorious episodes in Scottish history. In 1390 Alexander Stewart, the Wolf of Badenoch and son of Robert II, burned the cathedral and much of the town in a dispute with the Bishop of Moray. It was rebuilt, then fell into decay after the Reformation, and the twin western towers, octagonal chapter house and elaborate carving survive as one of the most affecting ruins in the country.
The town centre retains its medieval layout around the High Street, with the Muckle Cross, the arcaded frontages of a few surviving town houses, and St Giles' Church standing in the middle of the street. Elgin Museum, founded in 1836, is the oldest independent museum in Scotland and holds an internationally important collection of Moray fossils and Pictish stones. Johnstons of Elgin has made cashmere and woollens in the town since 1797 and remains one of the last vertical mills in Britain.
Elgin sits at the heart of Speyside, with around half of Scotland's malt whisky distilleries within easy reach, and whisky, agriculture and food production dominate the local economy alongside RAF Lossiemouth, one of the largest air stations in the UK, a few miles north. The town sits on the A96 between Inverness and Aberdeen, with Elgin station on the Aberdeen to Inverness line giving services in around an hour to each. Neighbouring communities include Lossiemouth, Forres, Fochabers, Rothes, Burghead and Keith.
Housing in Elgin is largely traditional, with sandstone Georgian and Victorian townhouses along the High Street and around the cathedral — much of the centre a conservation area with a substantial number of listed buildings — alongside Victorian villas, interwar and post-war council-built estates at Bishopmill and New Elgin, and substantial modern development on the town's southern and western edges. Property is affordable by national standards, and the town continues to grow as the service and employment hub for the whole of Moray.
