Bedford is a market town in Bedfordshire, sitting on the River Great Ouse around 50 miles north of London, with a population of around 105,000. It has been a settlement since Saxon times and grew up around a river crossing and a Norman castle, of which only the mound survives. Landmarks include St Paul's Church in the centre of town, the Bunyan Meeting Free Church with its bronze doors depicting scenes from The Pilgrim's Progress, and The Higgins Bedford, a museum and gallery housed in a former brewery. Priory Country Park and the river itself support rowing, boating and walking, and the town holds the biennial Bedford River Festival, one of the largest free events in the country.

Bedford is well placed for transport, with Bedford station on the Midland Main Line offering trains to London St Pancras in around 40 minutes and Thameslink services running through to Gatwick and Brighton. The A1 lies to the east and the M1 to the west, both within a short drive, and Luton Airport is around 20 miles away. The town's neighbourhoods include Goldington, Putnoe, Brickhill, Queens Park, Castle Road, Kempston, Elstow, Biddenham and Great Denham, with Bromham, Clapham and Sharnbrook among the surrounding villages.

Housing across Bedford is varied, with Victorian terraces and villas around Castle Road, Queens Park and the De Parys area, interwar semis in Goldington and Kempston, extensive post-war estates at Putnoe and Brickhill, and large modern developments at Great Denham, Wixams and Biddenham. The town continues to expand with new housing on its southern and western edges, while the older stock supports a steady flow of extensions, loft conversions, rewires and full refurbishments — particularly in the conservation areas around the river and De Parys Avenue.
