The two towns face each other across the river mouth, with Macduff retaining a working harbour and one of the last traditional wooden boatyards in Scotland.

Banff sits on the A98 coast road between Fraserburgh and Elgin, with the A97 running inland towards Huntly. The town has had no railway since the 1960s; Keith and Huntly are the nearest stations, and Aberdeen is around an hour and a quarter by road, Inverness a little over an hour and a half. The surrounding coast includes Macduff, Whitehills, Gardenstown, Portsoy and Cullen, with the Aberdeenshire farmland and the Deveron valley inland.
